Properties & Functions

Functions: Releases the exterior and dispels cold, warms the middle and stops vomiting, warms the lungs and transforms phlegm, neutralizes seafood and herbal toxins

Indications:

  • Wind-cold common cold, chills with no sweat
  • Stomach cold with vomiting and nausea
  • Cold-phlegm cough with thin white sputum
  • Cold abdominal pain, indigestion
  • Motion sickness and morning sickness (mild)
  • Joint pain aggravated by cold and damp

Usage & Prescriptions

Dosage: Fresh ginger 3-10g (3-5 slices), dried ginger 3-6g; decoct or infuse. Used freely in cooking. External: pound fresh ginger and apply to joints.

Fresh ginger 5 slices, brown sugar 15g, simmer in water and drink hot

Stomach cold vomiting

Fresh ginger juice 1 tsp, mix with warm water, sip slowly

Cold-phlegm cough

Dried ginger 6g, pinellia 9g, licorice 3g, decoct

Halia Ginger Tea with Gula Melaka

Quintessential Malaysian rainy-day drink, warming for chills, sore throat, and stomach upset

Servings: Serves 2

Ingredients:

  • Fresh ginger, sliced thin, 30g
  • Gula melaka (palm sugar) 30g
  • Pandan leaf, 1 piece, knotted
  • Lime juice 1 tsp
  • Water 600ml

Instructions:

  1. 1.Smash the ginger slices lightly to release oils
  2. 2.Bring water, ginger, and pandan to a boil
  3. 3.Simmer 15 minutes
  4. 4.Stir in palm sugar until fully dissolved
  5. 5.Strain into mugs, finish with a squeeze of lime, drink hot

Caution

Use sparingly in yin deficiency with internal heat, peptic ulcer, or hemorrhagic disorders. Limit to 1g dried ginger daily in pregnancy. Avoid large doses with blood-thinning or diabetes medications.
